On episode 8, we interview visual artist and landscape designer Stephanie Onwenu. As the owner of Ijeomalandscapes, LLC, Onwenu is the creator of this landscape art experience.
Ijeomalandartscapes LLC, explores the intersections between art, design, history, and culture. Ijeoma meaning “safe journey” in the Nigerian Igbo language speaks on the vision of each piece, its message, and delivery into the world (the process). “Art is life and is something that has always been a part of my journey…literally and figuratively.”
Stephanie Onwenu, artist and founder of Ijeomalandartscapes LLC, is a Detroit native and multifaceted creative. She enjoys taking an artistic approach to design through her work using 3D art and modeling as an expressive tool to convey ideas and concepts.
“It’s about the relationship between landscapes and how art can be used as a tool to create, experiment and to challenge the norm.” Escape Routes / Healing Spaces,' was visualized and created in response to a call for the “Seneca Village Ideas Pinup” in 2020 by landscape designer Elyana Javaheri. “In Central Park's current design, I would create designated healing spaces that would memorialize those families that were displaced out of Seneca Village. These healing spaces would honor those families and their descendants by providing an accessible space in the neighborhood, where one can heal, meditate, be free, educate oneself and to honor those who have come before us.”
This is through combining her backgrounds in landscape design, visual art, and storytelling, while bringing people together through creative art and stimulating discussions. What formally began as an independent art project, can now be found locally in various canvas sizes and designs at locations including the Eastern Market.
